“Reggae music is always there now but the thing that makes our music so important is the lyrics I think. Yes, it is necessary to understand the lyrics. You know. It has meaning to it. But because some people…understand the words, some people never go through them situation. But dreds of the world suffer. Masses of the people suffer. And this music comes from the masses of the people.”- Bob Marley
So something just occurred to me regarding our dear Princess Bubblegum and Marceline, and I can’t believe I didn’t think of it sooner. Specifically, this moment.
That’s the first line in the song I’m Just Your Problem, the song Marceline sang about her fractured relationship with Bubblegum and the first real glimpse we get at their history. For the longest time, the line seemed weirdly antagonistic, even given the song’s subject. Who starts a search for an apology with a threat to kill someone? In an episode that wound up focusing so much on the start of their reconciliation, what place does that have? It didn’t fit, but at the time I didn’t think too hard about it, and eventually I just forgot about it.
And then Stakes happened, and I found another really weird moment. Something that also seemed wildly out of place, and clashed horribly with the tone of the scene. Something that’s been puzzling me since it aired.
